How to Become a Candidate for Elective Town Office

Town Caucus

Candidates may be nominated at the Annual Town Caucus. This open meeting of all registered voters is usually in early March. Here, residents make their intentions known and are nominated, which must be duly seconded, from the floor. The two candidates for each available position who receives the largest number of votes at the caucus are designated "Caucus Nominees" on the Town Election ballot. Each caucus nominee must receive a minimum of 8 percent of the votes cast at the caucus.

Nomination Papers

Any qualified potential candidate who is not nominated by the Caucus may get his or her name on the ballot by filing nomination papers, which are available in the Town Clerk's office. The papers must bear the signatures of 50 registered voters in Weston and must be filed at least 49 days before the date of the Town Election. It is recommended that nominees obtain more than the minimum number of signatures required to protect against duplicate and/or invalid signatures.

Questions about the town election process should be addressed to the Town Clerk’s office at 781-786-5010.
