What is the Kids Reading Program?
It’s simply a way to make reading fun over the summer! There are two ways to keep track of your reading.
Once you register and start your Online Reading Log, the first option is to enter each book you read by title and author with a simple review. The second option is to complete Reading Challenges that pop up over the summer. And of course, you can do both!
Enter your reading starting June 14th; Reading Challenges start popping up on June 18th.
Reading Challenges:
Reading Challenges are a second way to participate! Click on the “Challenges” section of your Online Reading Log. Some challenges are to write book reviews, some are to complete reading or library-related tasks. Some are just for fun! New Challenges will pop up throughout the summer. Each time you complete a Reading or Activity Challenge, you will get an Award.
For every Award you earn, you also get a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of our Summer Reading Raffle Prizes! These are in the Display Case at the library. Decide which prize or prizes you would like to win, and put your tickets towards that. You must have completed your Reading Challenge or entered real book titles and reviews to be eligible for weekly prizes and raffle tickets. We do look at all the entries!
Prizes
Every Friday, the names of everyone who received an award point for entering five books or completing a challenge that week are entered in a weekly prize drawing. Winners will be notified by email.
We also have a Summer Reading Raffle! Every time Readers earn an award point they get a Raffle Ticket, which can be put towards the Summer Reading Raffle prizes. These bigger prizes will be on display in the Library. At the end of the Summer Reading Program, we will draw the names of the winners.
Everyone who participated in the program can join us the last week of August for a Summer Reading Celebration!
Vacation Crafts
Vacation Crafts will be available every week. Although the Craft Room will not be open this summer, we will be handing out Craft Kits at the Children’s Desk. Stop by and pick one up starting June 28th.
Programs for Kids:
Look for special performances for all ages throughout July and August! Get a calendar at the desk or check our Event Calendar (at www.westonlibrary.org) so you don't miss our special Summer Activities! Look for library storytimes, animal shows, puppet shows, art and craft workshops, and other special programs throughout July and August.
Entering Your Books Read:
In the Online Reading Log, enter the title and author of each book read. The database has some books already available, so if you see the cover of your book, click on it to automatically fill out the form. If there is no picture of the cover, please write down the full title and the author in the “Title” field. It is very easy to over-click! If you enter a book more than once, we will delete multiple entries. Add a short review. For every five books you complete, you will get to enter the weekly Summer Reading prize drawing.
Preschool Summer Program
How it works- info for parents and caregivers
Keep track of the books shared with your child. Enter the title and author of each book read together on their page in the online database. Write an optional review together! At home, you can have your child actively participate by keeping a running list or having your child decorate a list of completed books.
For every five books read to your child, you earn a chance to win one of the weekly Summer Reading prizes. They also get a ticket to put toward the Summer Reading Raffle, which will be awarded at the end of the summer. Our hope is that preschoolers are rewarded by the time spent reading with family members.
One note about the age to begin--we have found that children enjoy actively participating for about five years. Because of that, it is best to start your child in the program around age four or five. When you start a three-year-old in the program, by the time he/she is seven and really needs to be excited about the Reading Program, he/she may be tired of it.
Vacation Crafts
Vacation Crafts will be available every week. Although the Craft Room will not be open this summer, we will be handing out Craft Kits at the Children’s Desk. Stop by and pick one up starting June 28th.
Prizes
At the end of the summer, every participant who has read and entered information into their Online Reading Log is eligible to come to our Summer Reading Celebration. We will have prize bags for everyone, and each of our Readers and Young Readers can pick out a book for being such a winning Summer Program participant!

If you have any questions, please call 781-786-6165 or email wsnmail2@minlib.net
- Sign up starts on Monday, June 14th . Children may begin reading as soon as they sign up; the database will be ready to enter books starting June 18th, the day school ends.
- Some of our favorite reviews may be posted on the Youth Services Reading Blog throughout the summer at BellaOnBooks.wordpress.com.
- Children entering first grade may choose to participate in either the Preschool or the Elementary Reading Program, but not both. Likewise, students entering sixth grade can choose to do the Reading Program or the Teen Program. Pick the program that feels right for you!
- If your child has trouble spelling, doesn't like to write, or has problems with computers or counting their time, an adult may help enter the information. Older siblings often enjoy helping Preschool readers.
- Please read books that are at or near your reading level. The goal is NOT to get prizes by counting lots of short books. It IS to keep reading good books throughout the summer.
- If you are going away, remember as long as you have internet access, you may enter your reading! Just remember our deadline…
- The Weston Public Schools' summer reading goals are completely separate from our program. You may enter the books read for school in the Library’s program as well. Any reading (magazines, comic books, etc) can count towards your reading total. Audiobooks count too! (Please be sensible about a mixture of listening and reading though.)
The Deadline for entering books is midnight, Friday, August 20th. Your information must be entered in your Reading Log by then!
